I have always used Singer. I have my mom's and grandma's old machines and they still work, and they are from the 1920-40s. I buy most of my sewing supplies at JoAnn's, and you can find a machine on sale there. I would get something sort of basic at first. Why not take her to the library and look in the craft section and check out some books on sewing.... My grandmother taught me how to sew without patterns too. When I was little and she was sewing she would give me material scraps and I would figure out how to make them into clothes. I've been teaching my granddaughter too. Best of luck!!! BTW, I have a Singer now but Brother is a good brand too. Make sure to read the book and learn how to maintain your machine. I have my gg-grandmom's treadle machine and my mom's antique Singer...you have to keep them oiled or they don't work right -- my new one is 30+ years *LOL* and I have to oil it as well... Bunny,
